Girders to be set for new flyover ramp in Columbia

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The new "flyover" ramp connecting northbound U.S. Route 63 to westbound Interstate 70 is taking shape as construction is scheduled to hit another milestone in mid-September with the installation of the remaining girders. For the safety of drivers, westbound I-70 will narrow to one lane and be rerouted so crews can safely place these large beams, which will support the driving surface of the new ramp.

From 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, to 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, as construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation install the remaining girders, the following traffic impacts will be in place:

• Westbound I-70: Narrowed to one lane and directed up and over the ramps at the Connector (Exit 128).
• I-70/U.S. 63 Connector : No access over I-70, which will limit access to I-70.
  • No access to westbound I-70 from the south end of the Connector.
  • No access to eastbound I-70 from the north end of the Connector.

Those traveling southbound U.S. 63 from north of Columbia can access I-70 via Missouri Route 763 (Range Line Street). Those heading northbound U.S. 63 from south of Columbia can access westbound I-70 via Missouri Route 740 (Stadium Boulevard).

Motorists traveling westbound I-70 are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for extra time as backups are anticipated.

All work is weather-permitting and subject to change.

MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones.

This work is part of the first project in MoDOT's Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between Columbia) and Kingdom City. This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at U.S. Route 63 and U.S. Route 54.

Missouri's FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
