MADISON - Gov. Tony Evers today announced Wisconsin is joining a new multistate lawsuit fighting President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Administration's latest efforts to undermine women's health and access to critical resources for Wisconsin women and families, potentially jeopardizing key reproductive and preventative healthcare and family planning services like breast and cervical cancer screenings, access to contraception, testing, treatment, monitoring of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and pregnancy diagnosis and counseling, among other key services thousands of Wisconsinites rely on every day. The Trump Administration, in its ongoing quest to undermine and defund access to reproductive care and family planning services, recently sought to impose new ideological and politically driven requirements aimed at injecting radical ideology into medical and personal healthcare decisions of Wisconsinites and Americans, putting at risk critical services for more than 7,300 Wisconsinites. "We should be working to make sure every Wisconsinite can get the care they need when and where they need it, but President Trump and Republicans in Congress are making everyday life more expensive and, at the same time, making healthcare even harder to find and afford. It's unconscionable," said Gov. Evers. "Every Wisconsinite should have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions-most especially about their reproductive health-without interference from politicians or bureaucrats who don't know anything about their life circumstances, faith, values, or responsibilities. Clearly, President Trump and Republicans in Congress need a reminder of that basic fact, which is why we're taking them to court." In recent weeks, the governor has repeatedly slammed President Trump and Republicans in Congress, including Republican members of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation, for their disastrous decisions that are putting the health and well-being of Wisconsin kids, families, seniors, and communities at risk. For example, recent reports indicate that for the first time in seven years, enrollment in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) dropped nationwide, with a 12 percent drop in enrollment nationally. Last year, Republicans allowed the ACA enhanced premium tax credits to expire, causing healthcare coverage costs to skyrocket in Wisconsin and across America, resulting in nearly 3 million fewer Americans enrolling in healthcare coverage through the ACA, including 45,000 Wisconsinites. Additionally, another recently released report found that, as of June 30, 2026, the average American household has spent about $2,072 more on gas, electricity, and tariff-affected goods since President Trump took office for his second term. That total increases to $3,569 for a typical household if they receive health insurance through the ACA marketplace. According to the report, in Wisconsin, households have paid roughly $2,035 and $3,548 more during this time period, respectively, with costs only expected to increase during the remainder of the year. Enacted in 1970, Title X is the only federal funding stream dedicated specifically to supporting family planning and related preventive health services, which has long enjoyed bipartisan support. The multistate lawsuit argues that the Trump Administration's latest efforts to mirror the administration's political priorities through a funding announcement, instead of faithfully implementing statutory and regulatory requirements, is unlawful, unjustified, and will harm Wisconsinites and Americans across the country. The lawsuit Gov. Evers announced today challenges the Trump Administration U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) latest Notice of Funding Opportunity for federal family planning grants under Title X of the Public Health Service Act (Title X), which requires providers to change and align their programs with the Trump Administration's stated political priorities or risk ineligibility, undercutting the program's purpose and inserting partisan politics into long-established healthcare practices. A copy of the lawsuit filing is available here. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND ON GOV. EVERS' EFFORTS TO PROTECT WOMEN'S HEALTH AND ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE IN WISCONSIN Over the last nearly eight years, Gov. Evers and the Evers Administration have worked diligently to protect and expand access to quality, affordable healthcare and health services in Wisconsin, including women's health. Earlier this year, Gov. Evers delivered on a key promise he made to Wisconsin moms as governor to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage for thousands of new moms, babies, and families across Wisconsin from 60 days to one year. Gov. Evers made extending postpartum coverage to one year a cornerstone of his "Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies" initiative, which he spent seven years working to pass, including the proposal in each of his four budgets as governor and even going so far as to repeatedly and directly implore lawmakers in many of his major addresses over eight years as governor to do so. In March, Gov. Evers also signed "Gail's Law," requiring health insurance policies, including BadgerCare, to fully cover medically necessary supplemental breast screenings or diagnostic breast examinations for those with dense breasts or who are at an increased risk of breast cancer. Gov. Evers signed the bill in honor of Gail Zeamer, a Wisconsinite who tragically passed away in 2024 after a late-stage diagnosis caused by undetected cancer in dense breast tissue. Gov. Evers has also urged bipartisan opposition to provisions in President Trump's proposed Federal Fiscal Year 2027 (FFY27) budget, sending a letter to every member of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation in which he outlined how the president's FFY27 budget only further exacerbates the consequences of the Trump Administration's cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA, and will jeopardize the health of Wisconsinites. The governor's letter was sent as congressional committees in Washington are expected to continue their work marking up the federal budget with the goal of finalizing the budget by the end of the current federal fiscal year on Oct. 1, 2026. Gov. Evers has also long maintained that Wisconsinites should be able to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions without interference from politicians who do not know anything about their faith, family, or circumstances. Days after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision was released, Gov. Evers and Attorney General John Kaul filed a lawsuit to clarify that Wisconsin's outdated, total criminal ban on abortion is unenforceable. In July 2023, a court ruling in Gov. Evers' litigation challenging the state's outdated abortion statute determined the 1849-era law does not prohibit abortions in Wisconsin, enabling healthcare providers to resume providing abortion care in Wisconsin in 2023. The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld this decision in June 2025. Additionally, over the course of the past seven-plus years, the governor has vetoed several bills passed by the Legislature, including several that would have restricted access to abortion, inserted politics into the personal and private conversations between patients and their healthcare providers, and made it harder for doctors to provide medically accurate information and treatment. Many of these bills also sought to limit healthcare options for people seeking basic, necessary care, such as pregnancy care, cancer screening and prevention, sexually transmitted disease screening and treatment, and wellness exams. As attacks on reproductive freedoms continue across the country, Gov. Evers will continue to fight any and all efforts that take away Wisconsinites' reproductive freedom or make reproductive healthcare any less accessible in Wisconsin than it is today. |
