Drew: I bet you bring out an amalgamation of a lot of different kind of attitudes towards from people because you have done so many different types of characters.

John: Well, you know, I try to keep it varied that you don't want to do the same thing. You don't wanna get bored and, I look for that, you know, I still do theater. I look for things that I haven't done before, but, you know, then you have to get in touch with that, you know, inner child of you when you do things like that, you know, versus the, the pickpocket film, which I had to do a lot of research for, you know, and to understand it. But I also loved the idea that there's this guy who's a, a thief, but he's got his own code and he's also, a caretaker. And he never really did that before in his life and so having done that in real life, I thought, wow, this is something that's not really celebrated in life.

Drew: OK, the film is called 'The Only Living Pickpocket in New York' I have seen this film. I love this film.

John: It's a beautiful script. You know, when you get something like that, as you know, it's a gift. I thought there was a beautiful love story within this crime structure. There's a power and a delicacy. A lot of times in films, you see everything, you see all the violence. All the violence that happens in our film is off camera. You see the cost of the violence.

John on How Dancing Led Him To Meet His Wife

Drew: By the way, when you dance like you are such a good dancer.

John: Well, I grew up dancing. I mean, I, my, everyone danced in my household.

Drew: Well, that's you dancing for the Knicks, but to your wife out there, you got swagger.

John: Well, that's how I met my wife. I was at the Yale School of Drama and I had my eye on her for the whole year, but I was kind of shy. So then I went up to her I said, 'I wanna dance with you.' I sort of pointed at her because I was nervous -

Drew: Wo you were shy, but you -

John: But I had to over, yeah, and, but then we danced, and then she, you know, I'm a good dancer.

Drew: I'm telling you it's the dancing.

John: I grew up, everyone dancing in my household. Later on, I sort of studied some dancing and I played athletics, but my mom used to dance sometimes to, cheer my father up sometimes. If he was like, he could be really melancholic and he'd, she'd put on like a whole show, you know, sort of a, a fake of faux striptease type of thing and some, we were just all, you know, her three boys and we'd be dancing around her with scarves.

John Demonstrates His Pickpocketing Skills on Ross

John: You want me to pickpocket you?

Ross: Well, yeah, maybe I have a wallet.

John: I don't know if you, so if Drew was my partner, right?...Yeah, but the whole idea you go from the social world, you don't want to impose on someone to the sort of to the personal and then to the, now you, you distract him a little bit. Just take a little step towards Drew. So there it is, and there it is, and it's gone, or whatever. But the thing is you just go like, don't go from here to there, but it's a clip, you know what I mean?

Ross: Wait, where's my wallet? I'm gonna steal so many wallets now, you guys. We learned.

John on His First Credit Being "Raging Bull" & Bringing Martin Scorcese Pastries

Drew: And looking through your IMDb, your first credit is 'Raging Bull.'

John: I had one line. Yeah, I was in an off, off-Broadway play with, my friend Michael Bataluco and Robert DeNiro came to see us and so we, they wanted to interview us and my dad was an amateur boxer and I happened to have read the book of 'Raging Bull.' So my friend and I decided to adapt a scene and we met Marty Scorsese and Robert DeNiro, who were big heroes of ours and, we told him that we had a scene and Bob was very interested and Marty was very nervous. He was like, 'Well, you know, we don't have a script. You know what are we gonna do? You know, there's no script.' And I was like, and I said, 'Well, you know, if we move the table' and we all 4 of us, and we did this very intimate scene. And they were very, enamored that we have these two young, we were too young for the roles, but they kept calling us back for the whole, for a year. I had all these callbacks and I went, and I thought my mother said, 'Well, if you're gonna go to his apartment for a reading, you should bring something. It would be polite.'

So I brought them pastries from Cafe Roma. I brought them pastries. I said, 'My mother said I should bring pastries.' So, anyway, so I had that. But then I've worked with both of them since then.

John on Working with Adam Sandler in "Mr. Deeds"

https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/3J8JvFtpOR9H

Drew: What comes to your mind when we say the sandman?

John: Well, you know, he's a real, he's a good basketball player, and we've played basketball and, you know, one on one, and, you know, and I've beaten him. So, he doesn't like that, but I'm taller than him. So maybe now he could maybe beat me because he's still playing and I've retired. But, he's a great guy and I've always had fun. When they asked me to do 'Mr. Deeds,' they wanted me to do different parts, and then I saw these two small roles and I said, 'If you put them together, that could be an interesting character.' I said, as long as you let me design the way I look because I wanted to look like a bullfighter. Yes, I had so much fun because playing a maid or a butler is always like a juicy part because you know everything. You run the household. So, and a lot of great roles, especially in the theater over the years, is someone who's the butler or the maid. And I thought, you know, I wanna be really, I had a lot of fun doing it.
