'I wouldn't be alive today': A heartwarming reunion at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville

Sometimes, the most powerful medicine isn't a procedure or a pill-it's a simple human touch. In Evansville, a warm hug and a few happy tears recently brought two women together to celebrate a life saved and a bond formed in the middle of a crisis. Kimberly Lynn finally got the chance to sit down and reconnect with Katie Schnautz, the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer she calls her "pillar of strength."

Kimberly was already being cared for as a patient at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville when she went in for what was supposed to be a routine ultrasound of her heart. But as she lay on the exam table, the situation suddenly turned terrifying. In the middle of the test, Kimberly began having a heart attack.

Katie, who was setting up to begin her study, noticed Kimberly was very short of breath. She didn't just jump into professional mode; she recognized the fear in Kimberly's eyes. While Katie quickly called for support to return the patient to her nursing unit,, she knew that Kimberly needed more than just medical intervention-she needed a friend.

"I remember her strength, her small hands, and just how calm she was," Kimberly shared, reflecting on those blurred moments. "I don't know if I could have stayed as steady as she did."

As the room began to fill with doctors and nurses, the atmosphere became chaotic, but Katie refused to leave Kimberly's side. Kimberly reached out and asked Katie to stay, and Katie did exactly that-holding Kimberly's hand tightly and talking to her through the noise, offering a sense of peace while her life hung in the balance.

"I could tell she was scared," Katie told Eyewitness News. "She knew something was not right with her body, and so I held her hand. She asked me to stay, so when the providers and nurses arrived, I stayed right there with her as things started to go downhill."

Kimberly later learned she had coded for over 13 minutes. Through every one of those critical seconds, Katie remained her anchor. That simple, steady human connection changed everything for Kimberly, giving her the strength to pull through.

Today, Kimberly is feeling "fabulous" and is back to enjoying life. While she is endlessly grateful for the skilled medical team that performed the life-saving procedures, it's the memory of Katie's hand in hers that stays with her most.
