Statement by Belarus MFA Spokesperson R.Varankou on presentation of note of protest to representative of Ukraine

18 June 2026

Today, the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus, Ivan Novitsky, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. He was handed a note of protest in connection with an attack carried out by a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle on 17 June 2026 in the Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation against a civilian bus carrying Belarusian citizens, mostly children.

The Ukrainian side was informed that, as a result of this heinous crime, a female Belarusian citizen was killed, and another six citizens, including five children, sustained injuries, some of which are severe.

The Republic of Belarus strongly condemns this inhumane act of terrorism, for which there is and can be no justification.

The Belarusian side has demanded comprehensive explanations of the incident from the Ukrainian side, an immediate and objective investigation, as well as the provision of information on holding all those responsible to the strictest accountability.

Belarus will continue to take all necessary measures to protect the lives and safety of its citizens and reserves the right to take appropriate action in respect of the Ukrainian side.
