On March 12, 2026, a delegation from the Australian Embassy in Tokyo visited Tohoku University. The delegation was led by Andrew Shearer, the Australian Ambassador-Designate to Japan, and included Minister Counsellor Stuart Watts and Counsellor Susan Jones.
After receiving a tour of the 3-GeV synchrotron radiation facility NanoTerasu, the delegation met with President Teiji Tominaga and other university leaders.
At the meeting, the university's representatives, including Executive Vice President (General Affairs, International Relations, and Academic Resources) Toshiya Ueki and Vice President (Educational Reform and Global Engagement) Masahiro Yamaguchi, introduced the university's initiatives and its current cooperative initiatives with Australia. Thereafter, opinions were exchanged regarding the further strengthening of the university's ties with Australia.
Ambassador-Designate Shearer and his delegation expressed a strong interest in NanoTerasu and the university's research initiatives, also expressing their support for further cooperation between Tohoku University and Australian universities and research institutions.
This visit is expected to lead to the deepening of the cooperative relationship in research and education between Tohoku University and Australian institutions.
