Undersecretary Ochoa Attends NPT Review Conference

Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Enrique Ochoa Martínez began a two-day visit to the United Nations in New York to participate in the NPT Review Conference.

At the conference, Undersecretary Ochoa reaffirmed Mexico's longstanding commitment to achieving and sustaining a nuclear-weapons-free world.

In light of excessive global spending on armaments and especially on nuclear weapons, he reiterated President Claudia Sheinbaum's proposal to direct a percentage of worldwide military expenditure toward a global reforestation program.

He also spoke on behalf of the New Agenda Coalition -comprising Brazil, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, and South Africa-, which since 1998 has been the most influential negotiating bloc in multilateral nuclear disarmament forums.

Mexico has maintained a leadership role within the NPT going back to the negotiation of the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which established the first nuclear-weapons-free zone in a densely populated region (Latin America and the Caribbean) and of which Mexico is the depositary state.

At the UN Security Council, Undersecretary Ochoa reaffirmed Mexico's position on maritime security, underscoring its commitment to international law and the importance of upholding transit rights and freedoms on international maritime routes.

He reiterated that protecting civilians, maintaining safe corridors, and preserving freedom of navigation are essential to both humanitarian objectives and global economic stability.
