It was 75 years ago on September 15, 1950, that First Lieutenant Baldomero López, a Marine and Hillsborough High School graduate, led his platoon across the seawall at Inchon, Korea. Wounded by enemy fire and clutching a live grenade, López pulled the grenade beneath him, giving his life to shield his fellow servicemen.

That act of selfless bravery earned López a posthumous Medal of Honor and forever linked his name to Tampa's story. On Monday, September 15, the city will honor his memory with a public remembrance ceremony marking the anniversary of his death and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Mayor Jane Castor will deliver remarks and present a proclamation at the ceremony, which will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at Centro Asturiano de Tampa, 1913 N. Nebraska Ave. Approximately 200 attendees are expected, including elected officials, MacDill Air Force Base leadership, and community members.

The program will include reflections from Judge E.J. Salcines, who will speak on López's place in Tampa history, as well as military leaders who will highlight the broader impact of his actions during the Korean War.

By opening Hispanic Heritage Month with this ceremony, the City of Tampa pays tribute not only to López's sacrifice, but also to the enduring contributions of Hispanic Americans to our nation's history.

Media outlets are invited to attend. Please RSVP by emailing [email protected]

Born in Ybor City in 1925, Baldomero López graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1943, followed by the U.S. Naval Academy before commissioning into the Marine Corps.

His name is carried by local landmarks across Tampa, including a school, nursing home and public pool, as well as the state's Korean War memorial.
