Castro Calls for the Release of San Antonio Dad in ICE Detention Center

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Ahead of his congressional oversight visit to the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in Karnes, Texas, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement:

"Octavio Daniel Cabrera Valdez was building a life for his family in San Antonio. He has an 8-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter who depend on him.

"He was at work-providing for his children-when ICE took him away. Octavio has been held in an ICE detention facility since April. Because he was the sole provider for his family, his partner and children have been forced out of their apartment.
"He had a valid work permit. He was caring for his mother and father. His parents and family members are U.S. citizens. He was working and contributing to his community. ICE is going after members of our communities, like Octavio, and tearing families apart in the process.
"Tomorrow, I will meet with Octavio to make sure he is okay and to check on conditions at the facility. Octavio should be released immediately and reunited with his family."

BACKGROUND:

Octavio Daniel Cabrera Valdez was detained while working on April 16, 2026. He is the father to two young children, 8-year-old Diego and 4-year-old Sofia. Before being detained, he provided care to his mother, who had an amputation following a car accident, and his father, who is seriously ill with diabetes.
