Tips to help IBX Medicare Advantage members get the care they need when they need it

As health needs change with age, getting timely care can feel overwhelming. Some members even put off getting regular care because they don't know where to begin. That's why Independence Blue Cross (IBX) is sharing simple steps its Medicare Advantage members can take to get the care they need, when they need it.

"We know there are some delays and gaps in care for our Medicare Advantage members that could be avoided with a few simple steps and decisions," said Dr. Luz Ramos, senior medical director at Independence Blue Cross. "Knowing when to start with a primary care provider, when telehealth makes sense, and where else to turn for help can save time and reduce stress."

What to do first to stay on top of your care

IBX encourages Medicare Advantage members to start with a few simple steps to make getting care easier.

  • Choose a primary care provider (PCP), make sure IBX has their information, and schedule an annual visit.
  • Stay up to date on routine screenings, vaccines, and wellness visits. They're quick to schedule and can help prevent more serious health issues down the road.
  • Make sure prescriptions are always on hand. Look into 90-day supplies or mail-order options.

What to ask when you need care quickly

If a member asks the right questions, they may be able to get the appointments they need sooner and avoid delays. It's also important for members to be clear about their symptoms and what they need when calling to schedule care. Some questions they can ask, include:

  • Is there a same-week or cancellation appointment available?
  • Can this visit be handled through telehealth?
  • Should I see my PCP first, or would urgent care be appropriate?
  • Is there someone who can help coordinate my care or next steps?

Knowing where to go for care can help you save time.

Choosing the right place to get care can help members get the treatment they need faster.

  • Primary care providers are best for ongoing concerns, preventive care, and referrals.
  • Telehealth is a convenient option for many common conditions, medication questions, and follow-up care.
  • Urgent care is appropriate for issues that need prompt attention but are not emergencies.

Extra support is available and easy to access

Caregivers and members managing chronic or complex conditions can get additional help from IBX to coordinate appointments, medications, and follow-up care. IBX has customer service and care navigation support available to help members understand their benefits and find the quickest path to care.

"When members have clear information and support, they can spend less time waiting for care and more time focusing on what matters most, their health," said Dr. Ramos.

Medicare Advantage members can get help navigating their care options by calling the number on the back of their ID card or visiting the IBX member site at ibx.com/login for additional resources.
