Last week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) released Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) performance feedback and final scores for the 2024 performance year and associated MIPS payment adjustment information for the 2026 payment year. The 2024 final score determines the payment adjustment an individual Eligible Clinician or group will receive in 2026. Positive, negative, or neutral payment adjustments will be applied to the Medicare paid amount for covered professional services furnished in 2026.
To access final score information anesthesiologists and their groups should sign in to the Quality Payment Program website.
Additional information can be found on the Quality Payment Program Resource page.
2024 Targeted Review Process
If anesthesiologists or their groups believe an error has been made, CMS is allowing an approximately 60-day time frame to request a targeted review. For this year, the targeted review period opened on September 9 and will close 30 days after the release of the 2026 MIPS payment adjustments. CMS expects to release of MIPS payment adjustments in approximately one month.
Although anesthesiologists and their groups may ask for a targeted review for a range of errors, the most common scenarios for a targeted review include if data was submitted under the wrong Tax Identification Number (TIN) or National Provider Identifier (NPI) or if performance categories were not automatically reweighted (e.g., groups qualified for reweighting from the extreme and uncontrollable circumstances policy).
Anesthesiologists and their groups may submit questions to the CMS QPP Service Center by phone at 1-866-288-8292 (TRS: 711) or by email at [email protected].
How to Request a Targeted Review
CMS generally requires documentation to support a targeted review request, which varies by circumstance. If the targeted review request is approved and results in a scoring change, CMS will update your final score and/or associated payment adjustment (if applicable) as soon as technically feasible. Targeted review decisions are final and not eligible for further review.
