The Central Oklahoma Labor Federation recently held a Labor and Friends awards banquet. The Women's Committee for IAM Heartland Locals 2909 and 850 were presented with a Humanitarian Volunteer Award for their work on the "Gears and Shears" charity event which provided professional haircuts, hygiene kits and hot meals in their community.
"It's an honor to be recognized by the Oklahoma Labor Federation and we are delighted that our member's work received awards, but the real impact is the people in our community that we have been able to help," said IAM Local 850 Secretary-Treasurer Alana Kirkpatrick, who also serves as the IAM's Oklahoma State Council President. "We look forward to continuing that work and doing more with each event."
Sister Kirkpatrick was also recognized as Volunteer of the Year Award by the Labor Federation. She was honored for her work on the "Capitol Hil Projects" which included several charity events in the Capitol Hill neighborhood that surround the building the two Locals share.
"The Heartland Locals show the true heart of members. Always giving, always helping," said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. "From planting trees, to holiday gifts for kids in the neighborhood, to helping the needy folks in the area have basic toiletries and supplies. They show the true spirit of what it means to be a good neighbor."
Also present at the banquet and receiving awards were Mindy Kitchen, Robyn Gregory, and Jami Meyer of Local 2909. Dallas Kirkpatrick and Tamara Wood of Local 850 were also recognized during the event for their work with "Gears and Shears". The event will occur again this year on June 8th.
"Our members do amazing work in the community and we are so proud of what they have accomplished," said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. "The charity work they do has a real impact on the community and it shows the true heart of our members."
