Portland State welcomes new Director of Campus Public Safety

Portland State University is pleased to welcome Tim Stump as its new Director of Campus Public Safety and Chief of Police, starting August 1. Bringing decades of law enforcement leadership and campus safety experience, Stump will lead the university's campus safety initiatives with a strong emphasis on community engagement, accessibility and trust.

Stump brings more than 33 years of law enforcement experience to PSU, including 17 years spent serving the University of New Mexico campus community. Throughout his career in higher education, he has successfully navigated the complex dynamics of urban campus environments, working closely with diverse student and community populations. His background includes specialized experience assisting individuals facing mental health crises and experiencing homelessness, as well as managing logistics and security for major university events and athletics.

"Tim's extensive background in urban campus policing and his deep commitment to compassionate, community-first safety make him the ideal leader for PSU," said PSU President Ann Cudd. "He understands that effective campus safety operations go far beyond keeping order - it's about building trust, supporting student success and ensuring our campus remains an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone."

Stump's philosophy on public safety centers on visibility, active listening and strong partnerships across campus. During his first few months, he plans to focus on listening to students, faculty, staff and community partners to better understand the unique culture of PSU and create a campus environment where everyone feels safe, supported and valued.

"I believe successful campus policing is built on relationships, trust, accessibility and partnerships that support both safety and student success," Stump said. "Campus law enforcement is about being a trusted partner in the community, helping guide students and ensuring campus remains a safe place where they can learn, grow and thrive."

An avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking and fishing with his wife, Julie, Stump said he's eager to call Portland home after years of visiting and admiring the city's rich history and strong sense of community.

Above all, Stump said he looks forward to immersing himself in campus life.

"I genuinely enjoy serving students and being part of a campus community," Stump added. "Universities are unique environments where meaningful relationships can be built and where people are developing into future leaders. Being part of that journey and helping create a safe environment for student success is incredibly rewarding."
