Safety tips and community resources shared as temperatures remain high

July 30, 2026

The National Weather Service reports that extreme heat persists across Oklahoma. Protect yourself by staying hydrated, wearing loose and lightweight clothing, limiting time outdoors and following other safety tips at Ready.gov/heat.

Locally, air conditioned public spaces are available at:

  • Norman City Hall, 201 W. Gray
  • Norman Development Center, 225 N. Webster
  • Norman Public Library East, 3051 E. Alameda
  • Norman Public Library West, 300 Norman Center Ct.

Additional 'Cool Zone' locations are compiled in an OKC metro-area list provided through OGE here.

Additional resources and available facilities:

  • An overnight shelter is available for anyone in need at the corner of James Garner and West Gray. The shelter typically opens each day at 5 PM but has been opening at 4 PM this week to help earlier relieve individuals from high temperatures.
  • Food & Shelter, located at 201 Reed Avenue, will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM each day while extreme heat continues.
  • The lobby of Central Oklahoma Community Mental Health Center, 909 E. Alameda, is available as a cooling station from 8 AM to 5 PM weekdays.
  • A public refrigerator for those in need is available behind Yellow Dog Coffee at 222 S. Porter Avenue.
  • A drink cooler is available outside of First Presbyterian Church, 555 S. University, for those in need.

Those seeking help or resources can also dial 2-1-1 or view a community resource list maintained through McFarlin United Methodist Church here.
