New Permanent Representative of Costa Rica Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Mario Enrique Zamora Cordero, the new Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Zamora Cordero had been serving as the Minister of Public Security and Minister of the Interior and Police of Costa Rica since 2023, a position he also held from 2011 to 2014. Other high-level positions he has held for the Government of Costa Rica include being Director of the Institute of Human Rights Education and Director of Special Protection within the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman, Deputy Minister of the Interior and Police, Director General of Migration and Foreigners, National Director of the Community Safety Programme, and Deputy Director of the National Police Academy.

In international fora, he has represented Costa Rica in the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union and served as Vice-Chair of the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas and as President of the Central American Commission of Migration Directors.

A lawyer by training specialising in public security, migration and human rights, Mr. Zamora Cordero has a degree in law from the University of Costa Rica; a Master of Latin American Studies from the Institute of Ibero-America and Portugal Studies of the University of Salamanca, Spain; and a diploma in international humanitarian law from the Universidad del Rosario, Colombia. Further, he has graduated from doctoral programmes on the application of human rights in criminal matters and criminal procedure and on peace and conflicts.
