Selections from the works of UToledo students London Toney, Naya Jones, Juan Drown, Liz Paulson and Caleb Thompson were featured in the New Voices shows on Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor.
The screenings were followed by a filmmaker Q&A, during which UToledo students were invited onstage to discuss their work.
"It was exciting to see our students' films alongside those of other universities at the Ann Arbor Film Festival," said Tammy Kinsey, a film professor at UToledo. "Having our students' work shown with films from other regional (and more distant) universities gives us name recognition and reinforces our status and credibility as a program."
Holly Hey, a film professor at UToledo, teaches three of the department's courses that produced four out of the five films brought to this festival: "Glow," "The Trouble With Normal," "Live, Die, Repeat" and "Camping Trip."
"I am so pleased that my students' work has achieved prestigious recognition from The Ann Arbor Film Festival and am very proud of my students' hard work in imagining, making, and completing their films," said Hey. "It was a joy to guide each student through their projects in all the different capacities required of them by the curriculum.
"Our students' success at the Ann Arbor Film Festival shines a bright light on their achievements," Hey added, "while bouncing some of that light back onto how well UToledo prepares film students for success beyond the University gates."
