From 21 to 26 September, a high-level delegation of the European Union will travel to New York to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This year's UNGA takes place at a time of significant geopolitical challenges and mounting global crises. Against this backdrop, the UN's 80th anniversary is a timely opportunity to renew collective commitment to global cooperation and to shaping a United Nations fit for the future. The EU and its Member States will be joining the international community to send a clear message of unwavering support to multilateralism, with the UN at its core. During the week, the EU's engagement will centre on deepening partnerships across regions, mobilising collective action for peace and security, advancing sustainable development, and upholding the universality of human rights.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, together with the President of the European Council António Costa, will host or participate in events and meetings with leaders from around the world. They will be joined by Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, and Commissioners Dubravka Šuica, Wopke Hoekstra, Jozef Síkela, Hadja Lahbib, Magnus Brunner, Jessika Roswall, Dan Jørgensen, and Glenn Micallef.
This EU leadership team will represent the Union at the UN-mandated high-level meetings. The EU will host or co-host several flagship events in the margins of the General Assembly. EU representatives will have a full agenda of high-level debates and side events, as well as numerous bilateral meetings.
President von der Leyen will take part in the high-level commemorative meeting of the UN General Assembly, marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations on Monday morning. She will then deliver a speech at the Global Renewables Summit. In the afternoon, the President will address the high-level international conference on the two-state solution, hosted by France.
On Tuesday, President von der Leyen will join the opening of the 80th UN General Assembly. Later, she will speak at the conference "Restoring Childhood and Humanity - Advancing Peace in Ukraine through the Return of Ukrainian Children", co-hosted by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
On Wednesday, President von der Leyen will deliver a speech during the high-level event 'Protecting Children in the Digital Age', hosted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. She will also take part in a panel discussion on 'Investing in Renewable Energy in Africa' at the Global Citizen Now Impact Sessions. Finally, the President will participate in the Special High-Level Event on Climate Action, hosted by the UN Secretary General António Guterres.
