Rising to more than 1,300 feet, San Bruno Mountain offers sweeping views across the Bay Area. The improvements include new picnic areas and a circular pathway, expanding opportunities for residents to gather and enjoy the regional gem.
For some, the improvements restore a place tied to lifelong memories - and the potential to create new ones for the next generation.
"San Bruno Mountain Park holds a very special place in my heart," said Danny Chui, now the principal of John F. Kennedy Elementary School located on the mountain's western flank.
"My brother and I didn't have much, so our parents tried to find free activities for us to do. When we discovered the mountain and the picnic area, we spent the majority of our weekends there. We'd hike the mile up Crocker Avenue and then another mile into the park with a wooden bat and tennis ball. Once we reached the picnic area, we'd play stickball behind the restrooms until the sun went down."
"Now as principal of JFK Elementary in Daly City, we've made it an annual tradition to hike the mountain, pick some wild blackberries and eat lunch in the very same area every year. We stop at the viewing bench to take one last picture together before the year ends and our 5th graders are promoted to middle school. It's their last community building event before they move on, and I'm so glad we get to continue that tradition this year."
Stories like these highlight the importance of investing in parks accessible to all.
"San Bruno Mountain offers a great outdoor escape from close-by urban life with 12 miles of hiking trails, wildflower displays, and spectacular views of San Francisco and the Farallon Islands," said San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, whose district includes the park. "This project will enhance the visitor experience and likely encourage more people to explore this remarkable place."
"San Bruno Mountain is a special place for our community, and these improvements reflect our commitment to creating welcoming, accessible spaces for everyone to gather, connect, and enjoy the outdoors!" said Interim Parks Director Emma Gonzalez.
Assistant Parks Director Hannah Ormshaw adds that "the new interpretive pavilion adds a unique amenity for visitors to appreciate the natural significance and history of the park".
The $2 million project reflects community input gathered between 2022 and 2023 and a broader effort to improve access to County parks.
Funding comes from the voter-approved Measure K half-cent sales tax and other County sources.
