OCTFME RECOGNIZES DEMETRIUS SADLER AS THE MAY 2026 FILMMAKER OF THE MONTH

(Washington, DC) - The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCTFME) is proud to recognize filmmaker Demetrius Sadler as the May 2026 Filmmaker of the Month, whose passion for film and visual storytelling led him to pursue a career in filmmaking and directing music videos and independent films.
A graduate of the University of Rochester, where he studied Digital Media and Audio Engineering, Demetrius began his creative journey in audio production, engineering records for local bands and providing live sound mixing for artists in both Rochester and Washington, DC.
"Demetrius represents the next generation of visionary storytellers emerging from Washington, DC," said LaToya Foster, OCTFME Director and Film Commissioner. "His journey, from DC Public Schools to award-winning filmmaker, reflects the power of local talent, mentorship, and creative opportunity. Through his work, he is not only elevating his own voice but contributing to the broader cultural narrative of our city. We are proud to recognize him as our May Filmmaker of the Month."

Demetrius founded his own production company, Chimaera Pictures in Spring of 2025 and went on to write, direct, and produce the award-winning psychological thriller short film "ATTACHED." The film has garnered multiple festival selections and earned the Outstanding Achievement Award: Best Thriller Short at the Indie Short Fest. His work blends suspense with deeper reflections on myth, community, and social freedom.
Demetrius credits his early inspiration to his time in DC Public Schools where a middle school teacher introduced him to transformative films such as "Malcolm X" and "Daughters of the Dust," sparking a lifelong passion for cinema. He further developed his craft through the Arts Institute of Creative Advancement at The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts where mentorship and theater training helped shape his approach to filmmaking and exposed him to the art of theater, an art form of deep preparation and reckless spontaneity. That controlled chaos translated over to Demetrius's own work in film in the way he approaches directing and producing.
"I am truly honored to be OCTFME's Filmmaker of the Month for May," says Demetrius. "As a student of DC public schools, the first person to ever inspire me was my middle school world history teacher, Mr. Mbilishaka. Instead of exploring the globe through facts and maps, he showed us films from Malcolm X to Daughters of the Dust. It was his love for film that led me to his favorite place: the Sankofa bookstore on Georgia Avenue where I learned to not just love the art, but study it. It is unbelievable to me that over 10 years later the city, culture and people that inspired me are inspired by the art I got to make. I am a living example of how stories can shape our destiny. It is my hope that my work and this platform can embolden my community of creatives to be brave enough to step into their calling and push forward the legacy of DC art."
Demetrius's film credits include "ATTACHED," for which he served as Director/Writer/Producer; "DOUEN," for which he served as 1st Assistant Director; "The Killing Instinct," for which he served as 1st Assistant Director; "BLK LIT iHeart Media Podcast Promo," for which he served as 1st Assistant Director; and "Titanic: The Musical," for which he served as Assistant Stage Manager.
One of the main themes of "ATTACHED" is how often trauma can stall ambition for young people and how leaning into community can be a great start on a journey to walking into purpose. It will be screened at the LightReel Film Festival on Saturday, June 6 at 4:45 p.m. at the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market and continues its festival run with upcoming screenings in New Jersey, New York, Florida and Boston. They'll also be planned community screenings throughout the summer in June, July and August in DC, bringing in mental health resources and counselors to help creatives get valuable information on self-care and healing.
He's also in development for "Harris Hall," a college horror anthology series slated for production in Fall 2026 with a planned Spring 2027 release.
OCTFME continues to celebrate local creatives who are shaping the District's thriving film and media landscape. His dedication to storytelling, community, and cultural preservation embodies the spirit of the Filmmaker of the Month program.
Audiences can connect with Demetrius and explore his work through his Instagram (@demetriusfilms), IMDb, and YouTube Channel.
