UNESCO Sudan Office in partnership with MiCT Launches Media Capacity Building Workshop for Sudanese Journalists in Port Sudan

The workshop also benefits technical support from UNESCO Headquarters, particularly in delivering a session on UNESCO's global work in advancing freedom of expression, media development, and the safety of journalists.

"This workshop comes at a critical time for journalists working in conflict contexts. It provided a valuable platform for dialogue, exchange, and active participation, allowing us to reflect on the challenges we face and strengthen our professional skills. The interactive and unconventional approach made it especially impactful, equipping us with practical knowledge we can apply in our daily work." ParticipatingJournalist

This initiative reflects the strong partnership between UNESCO and MiCT, combining international expertise and local engagement to support independent and resilient media in Sudan.

"This workshop is a timely and much-needed initiative, particularly as it is being held in Port Sudan for the first time. It brought together media professionals from diverse backgrounds, creating a space to exchange experiences and strengthen our ability to work safely and effectively under pressure. In the current context, where journalists face significant constraints, such opportunities are essential. I hope this initiative continues and expands, with even more practical components in future editions." Participating Journalist

The workshop comes ahead of World Press Freedom Day 2026, observed annually on May 3. This year's theme, "Freedom of Expression in the Face of the AI Revolution", highlights the opportunities and challenges emerging technologies present to journalism and public-interest information.

This activity is part of UNESCO's Emergency Action Plan for Sudan (2025-27) and is generously supported by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Through this workshop, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment and dedication to empowering Sudanese journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the evolving media landscape while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
