Deep frying a turkey is a popular way to prepare the Thanksgiving turkey. Unfortunately, it can also be dangerous. There are things you can do to up the safety factor if you still plan on using a turkey fryer:
-
Wear oven mitts and an apron to help prevent hot oil splashes on your skin, and safety glasses in the event it splashes up into your eyes.
-
Place the fryer on an even surface, a safe distance away from trees and other structures. Avoid moving it once it is in use.
-
Completely thaw your turkey and blot excess moisture before frying.
-
Set the fryer on an UNLIT burner and add the appropriate amount of oil. Do not overfill with oil.
-
Light the burner and place the lid on the pot until the oil reaches 350 degrees. Once the oil is at temperature, slowly lower your turkey into the oil.
-
Never leave the fryer unattended and keep the correct type of fire extinguisher nearby and ready to use.
Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends and cook the turkey, not the garage.
