Overnight Alternating Lane Closures are Planned for I-580 in Contra Costa County, Including Areas Near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza And Between Bayview Avenue and Regatta Boulevard

Contra Costa County - Caltrans District 4 will conduct overnight lane striping and temporary barrier placement in preparation for the I-580 Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Open Road Tolling Project, which aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and toll operations. The initial phase will begin on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Richmond San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza and along I-580 eastbound and westbound up to 2 lanes closed at a time between Bayview Avenue and Regatta Boulevard 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM nightly.

Motorists should expect a speed limit reduction of 10 miles per hour throughout the work zone.

Work is expected to continue Monday through Friday, except for Surveyor work closures scheduled on Sunday, April 26, 2026, along I-580 in both directions in Contra Costa County between the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and Bayview Avenue through the completion of this project tentatively set for Summer 2027. These activities are essential to safely prepare the Toll Plaza area for upcoming construction which includes removing existing toll booths and installing new tolling gantry, an updated lane configuration for westbound I-580 traffic crossing the Toll Plaza new signage installation as well as realigning the Stenmark Drive westbound I-580 on-ramp. and other related work. Median barrier work between Bayview Ave and Regatta Boulevard on I-580 includes installing temporary barriers and replacing sections of the median barrier, along with upgrades such as new signage.

Westbound I-580 - Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza

  • Sunday April 26, 2026 - Friday April, May 1, 2026 - 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  • 4:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Monday April 27, 2026
  • Multiple alternating toll lane and lane closures (up to two (2) lanes closed at a time)
  • Toll Plaza reconfiguration and temporary barrier installation to begin construction of new toll gantry structure
  • Toll gantry structure piling preparation to begin on day shift
  • Reduced speed to 35 MPH from Castro Street on Ramp to the Toll Plaza prepare to merge

*Stenmark Drive will remain accessible; however, flaggers may be used to assist drivers through the area periodically.

*Daytime work will occur in Toll Plaza without lane closures.

Westbound & Eastbound I-580 - Between Bayview Avenue and Regatta Boulevard

  • Sunday April 26, 2026 - Friday May 1, 2026- 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  • Up to 2 lanes closed at a time
  • Median barrier reconstruction for HOV lane signage
  • Reduced speed to 55 MPH motorists should prepare to merge

Changeable Message Signs (CMS) will provide advance notice for motorists traveling in the area.
