Welcome to Water Words

Welcome to Water Words, the Metro Nashville Water Services blog! We're glad you're here.

At Metro Water, our work touches every part of the community, often in ways that aren't always visible. This space is designed to help close that gap and bring you closer to the people, processes, and purpose behind the utility that provides safe, clean, and reliable water services for everyone in Nashville.

Metro Water covers a lot of ground, and you might be surprised by just how many areas are involved in keeping our city's water systems running sustainably.

Our Drinking Water Division works around the clock to deliver reliable, high-quality water to homes and businesses across Davidson County. Behind every turn of the tap is a team committed to safety, science, and stewardship.

Ensuring that water leaving your home is reclaimed responsibly before it's returned to the environment is the mission of our Wastewater Division. We ensure the water is cleaner than when it arrives at our reclamation facility. Our work protects our wildlife and the health of our community.

The Stormwater Division is another big part of what we do. Beyond managing stormwater runoff, pollution, and reducing flood risks, this division includes teams dedicated to caring for our Cumberland River watershed. Our Community Forestry group plants and maintains trees that improve air quality and support healthier neighborhoods. The Soil and Water Conservation District offers guidance and resources for residents interested in gardening, farming, or learning to manage their land sustainably. Whether you have a garden at home or manage a larger property, we're here to help Nashvillians make informed and environmentally friendly choices.

We also have regulatory teams, like Environmental Compliance, who work closely with industries and businesses to ensure that discharges and waste handling don't harm our sewer system or the environment. Their efforts protect public health and preserve the natural resources that make Nashville such a special place to live.

If you didn't know Metro Water covers all these areas, that's ok! Most people don't. Our mission for Water Words is to share all the ways Metro Water serves the Nashville and Davidson County population. We will lend the spotlight to behind-the-scenes stories, practical tips, project highlights, and insights into the how and why of our work. Our hope is that it becomes another meaningful bridge between our utility and the community we're proud to serve.

We will also be diving into the History of Metro Water (listen up, History Buffs!). Our city's water story didn't start with modern treatment; it began long before Nashville looked like it does today. Water has shaped the growth and resilience of this community for generations. From early infrastructure that supported a growing city to major floods that changed the course of local policy and planning, Nashville's water history is full of lessons that continue to guide our work to this day.

We'll share historical stories, highlight milestones in Metro Water's development, and explore how earlier decisions and events have influenced the systems we rely on today.

Thanks for joining us! We're excited to share more with you and even more excited to help you be connected to the water that supports all of Nashville.

Stay tapped in!
