Mozambique Welcomes New Commander of EU Mission

"Ensuring conditions for a firm stance in the fight"

Speaking shortly after taking command, Commodore Correia assured that all the necessary conditions are in place for the mission to continue supporting Mozambique in maintaining a firm stance against the terrorist threat that has plagued Cabo Delgado since 2017.

Among the priorities he outlined:

  • Consolidating the training of Mozambican forces, both in operational and strategic capacities.
  • Strengthening institutional cooperation between the EU mission and the FADM.
  • Ensuring that resources - human, logistical, and doctrinal - are fully aligned to meet ongoing security challenges.

New leadership, continuity of mission

The arrival of Commodore Correia represents continuity in mandate. EUMAM Mozambique will remain focused on training, advising, and equipping Mozambican troops so they can operate more effectively on the ground. The mission serves as a bridge between international support and Mozambique's domestic efforts to stabilize areas affected by insurgency.

Outgoing commander Major General Luís Barroso oversaw the mission through a period of significant progress, including improved operational planning, stronger logistical capabilities within the FADM, and greater coordination with regional and international partners. Under Correia's leadership, these foundations are expected to deepen.

Looking ahead to Cabo Delgado and beyond

Cabo Delgado remains the epicenter of Mozambique's security challenges, with sporadic terrorist attacks and complex humanitarian conditions. The EU mission, as stressed by the new commander, will maintain a robust support posture - not only by providing military specialised training but also by building institutional confidence and resilience.

"It is not only about arming or equipping," Correia emphasized, "but about consolidating capacities, ensuring Mozambican soldiers are well prepared, and that the logistical and strategic support systems remain strong."

Implications for Mozambique and EU partners

The change of command comes at a pivotal moment, as Mozambique strengthens its engagement with international partners to stabilize southern Africa. Joint security operations, respect for human rights, and humanitarian support remain central to the wider effort.

For the European Union, the transition highlights its ongoing commitment to Mozambique - not only through financial resources and pledges but with concrete operational presence on the ground, led by capable commanders ready to respond to evolving challenges.
