Caltrans Traffic Advisory Overnight Lane Closures on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge for Structural Steel Painting & Spall Repairs Project

Caltrans Traffic Advisory Overnight Lane Closures on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge for Structural Steel Painting & Spall Repairs Project

Published: Aug 07, 2026

Lane closures will be in effect Sundays through Thursdays, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Caltrans began a new project to install a temporary bridge installation platform (Safe Span) on the upper portion of the lower deck of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB). This work requires overnight closures of four lanes on the eastbound I-80, leaving one lane open for the traveling public. Lane closures will occur Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., most nights through October 2026. The closure area extends from the San Francisco Anchorage/Rincon Hill to the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel. All lanes will reopen each morning once work concludes.

The Safe Spans installation is essential to ensuring the safety of Caltrans crews while they paint sections of the bridge. The Safe Span system provides a secure, full-width platform that allows workers to safely access and apply paint to the lower deck. This effort is part of the broader Structural Steel Painting & Spall Repairs Project, launched by Caltrans in April 2026. The project is designed to enhance the durability and long-term safety of the bridge and is expected to be completed over five years, by 2031.
