RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Department of Education announced today that April Insley, a Yorktown Elementary Library Media Specialist, has been named the 2027 Region 2 Teacher of the Year - recognizing her commitment to creating engaging, inclusive learning environments where young learners thrive.
"At the center of April's work, there is an unshakeable belief that every child deserves to be known, challenged, and championed," said York County School Division Superintendent, Dr. James Carroll. "She builds authentic relationships with students, understanding not only their academic needs but also their interests, strengths, and personal stories. Her media center is a place where students feel safe to take risks, think critically, and grow confidently."
Beyond the media center, Insley actively partners with families and colleagues to support student success and strengthen the York County school community. She regularly collaborates with fellow educators to share strategies and support innovative teaching practices that benefit all learners. Insley brings her knowledge as a LETRS trainer to her instruction to support all readers who cross through her library doors.
"Mrs. Insley is truly the heart of our school community, said Yorktown Elementary School Principal, Meagan Gavin. "She bleeds Falcon blue and green and embodies the very best of public education in the Commonwealth - collaboration, innovation, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to children and the families she serves."
Insley is dedicated to supporting her community through active volunteer service. She gives her time to several civic efforts, including helping with animal rescue, serving on the swim team board, and volunteering through her church.
"Teachers like April do more than deliver instruction-they build communities in and out of classrooms that make tremendous impacts," said Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jenna Conway. "Mrs. Insley's ability to inspire curiosity and confidence in young learners creates a foundation for lifelong learning."
Insley will represent Region 2, the Tidewater region, in the statewide Virginia Teacher of the Year selection process.
