5 Things for September from Monterey County Free Libraries

September is here and fall is in the air, kids are back at school and a Library Card will help students get the academic support they need to succeed in school.

September is Library Card Sign Up Month and our library branches are reaching out to the local School Districts to sign students up for a Library Card. With a library card, students can access resources from home. There's no need to come into the library to find resources. HelpNow, offers live tutoring and homework help from 1:00-11:00 pm daily, just log in with your library card from home. Students can download ebooks to read from the Libby or Palace Project apps free with an MCFL library card. Other helpful Student Resources are available at this link.

September 8 is International Literacy Day. First celebrated globally in 1967, this observance reminds us of the vital importance of literacy as a basic human right and a foundation for peaceful societies. MCFL has an active Adult Literacy Program to help adults work on reading, comprehension and writing skills. For English Language Learners, the online resource, Transparent Languages offers English for new language learners.

Latino Heritage Month begins on September 15 and runs through October 15. We will celebrate authors of Latino heritage all month long with weekly posts on Facebook and Instagram. From the MCFL Virtual Program Channel we will post craft activities and bilingual storytimes each week throughout the month.

During the week of September 17, Monterey County celebrates Bracero Workers History Recognition Week. In response to the labor shortages the country was facing, more than 4.5 million Mexicans came to the states to work, primarily in agriculture, under the Bracero Program from 1942 to 1964, many came to Monterey County. All MCFL libraries will be closed for a Staff Training Day on Friday, September 4, and in observance of Labor Day on Saturday, September 5 and Monday September 7.
