Katelyn Griffiths balances two roles that require focus, patience, and a steady sense of direction. In her civilian life, Katelyn is a project manager at Amrize. Outside the office, she's a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Katelyn is among many Amrize colleagues who've chosen a life of service. No matter what the branch of service, they share a prized quality: a commitment to teamwork, discipline, and accountability that persists in or out of uniform.

As we honor colleagues who have served on this Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, we reflect on how the skills that helped them lead military operations can help them lead in the civilian world too.

Katelyn appreciates how her military experience helps her connect with a wide range of people.

Katelyn: A path to school leads to a sense of purpose

Katelyn joined the military in 2019 with a simple goal: She wanted to pay for school. But after commissioning in 2020, she gained new responsibilities and an unexpected sense of purpose.

Her civil affairs role has taken her to Pacific Island communities where teams provide humanitarian support and build long-term relationships. "I find meaning in listening to people, understanding what they need, and working alongside them," she says.

That emphasis on connection and partnership carries into her project manager day job. Katelyn says her military experience strengthened her communication skills and taught her how to negotiate and work with a wide range of personalities. At the same time, her duties at Amrize sharpened her attention to detail.

"My experience with Amrize has been instrumental in teaching me to have a keen eye, especially during [military] inspections. Each role makes me better at the other."

When she's not in the field or the office, Katelyn can be found in the ring. She has been boxing for four years and loves the discipline and confidence it brings to her life.

Cody Tucker, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, now serves as an operations manager at Amrize.

Cody: 'Service shapes you in ways that matter'

Cody Tucker, now an operations manager at Amrize, began his career path in the United States Marine Corps in 1983. Growing up in a small town in southern Missouri, he wanted more than the life in front of him, and college was not financially attainable. The military offered a way forward and the chance to push himself.

Cody advanced quickly. He was meritoriously promoted out of boot camp to private first class, then again during infantry training. Within just over a year, he reached corporal.

His service took him overseas and opened doors to specialized training. There was cold weather survival in the mountains of Nevada, jungle survival in the Philippines, and time working with Navy SEALs in Coronado. Leadership school solidified the approach Cody still uses today.

The most rewarding part of Cody's service, he says, was "Being rewarded for deeds, not words."

"I learned how to lead and develop people, to drive them to have a sense of pride and bring their best selves forward." These are the same qualities he shares with his teams at Amrize.

Cody's message to other veterans is simple.

"Be proud of your service record. Service shapes you in ways that matter. The world needs people with initiative, who set clear expectations and help people achieve them."

Away from work, Cody keeps his sense of adventure alive. He enjoys weekend trips, time on the water, and exploring new places on his BMW GS motorcycle.

Buddy says his time in the Air Force gave him experiences he could not have gained in any other way.

Buddy: Following in his grandfather's bootsteps

Buddy Crawford, now an HR manager at Amrize, served in the United States Air Force from 2007 to 2015. He'd attained the role of Staff Sergeant by the time he ended his eight-year commitment.

His decision to join was inspired by a family role model. His grandfather had served in the Air Force, and following in his footsteps felt like the right way to honor that influence.

During his service, Buddy met people who left lasting marks on his life. "The most rewarding part of those years was the community I found and the invaluable life lessons I learned," he shares. Experiences that challenged him, influenced him, and gave him insights he could not have gained anywhere else.

"My time in the Air Force shaped my skills in leadership, discipline and policy management that I believe have been a key part of my success here at Amrize."

When he thinks about other veterans, his message is simple. "Thank you for your service, and Happy Veterans Day."

Outside of work, Buddy loves building and rebuilding Volkswagen cars. He spends his spare time turning them into rail buggies suited for both on-road and off-road adventures. It is a hobby that brings him joy and a bit of grease under the fingernails.

BRAVE: A community for those who live this quality

At Amrize, the experiences of veterans like Katelyn, Buddy and Cody are one reason the BRAVE program exists. BRAVE, which stands for Building Respect and Advocacy for Veteran Employees, was founded on Veterans Day 2023 to support those who serve and their allies.

BRAVE brings together veteran employees, active service members, and supporters from all countries. The group creates a place where people can connect, share their experiences, and look out for one another. It also helps advocate for veteran needs, educates on resources and benefits, and organizes volunteer efforts that give back to local communities.

Whether someone is retired from service, currently serving, or simply wants to support the people who have served, the door is open. BRAVE continues to grow as more members join, share their stories, and build a stronger network across Amrize.

Thank you for your service, this day and all days

Katelyn, Buddy and Cody remind us that service leaves a lasting mark. It shows up in how you lead, how you support others, and how you approach each day. Their stories reflect the strength of the many veterans across our company.

This Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, we honor those who have served in the military, at home or abroad. We are grateful for their courage, their discipline, and the perspective they bring to our workplace and our communities.
