Columbia passes Prop 1 to establish one percent general sales and use tax dedicated to public safety

On Aug. 4, City of Columbia voters approved Prop 1, a one percent general sales and use tax dedicated to public safety.

The passage of Prop 1 provides the City with a dedicated funding source for public safety operations and capital improvements. City staff projects the tax to generate approximately $38 million annually, with revenues dedicated exclusively to the Columbia Police and Fire departments.

The City will use funding from Prop 1 for personnel, equipment and facilities to help meet the needs of Columbia's growing community. Planned projects include:

  • Adding 50 police officers
  • Adding 42 firefighters
  • Constructing a new police headquarters
  • Building two new fire stations
  • Renovating three existing fire stations
  • Purchasing equipment and technology for first responders

As Columbia continues to grow, the City will use the funding generated through Prop 1 to address current and future public safety needs. The projects identified as part of the measure are intended to improve emergency response capabilities, support recruitment and retention efforts and provide facilities and equipment for police officers and firefighters.

The City appreciates everyone who participated in the election and remains committed to being a responsible steward of public funds. As implementation begins, residents will continue to receive updates on the projects and initiatives funded through Prop 1.
