This arts programming is made possible by support from Art Bridges, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the African American Atelier. "Fighters for Freedom: William H Johnson Picturing Justice" illuminates the work of painter William H. Johnson (1901 -1970), an artist associated with the Harlem Renaissance, who painted this series in the mid-1940s as tribute to African American activists, scientists, teachers, performers, and other historical figures working to bring peace to the world.
