Taking Science from Bench to Bedside to the Block – Introducing Dr. Robert A. Winn

June 16, 2026
Robert A. Winn, MD, Cancer Center Director, Fox Chase Cancer Center

When Robert A. Winn, MD talks about his path to becoming a physician, scientist, and leader, he doesn't begin with his accomplishments, but with a simple idea: "I always tell people that my story is one of hope."

Shaped by early educational opportunities and mentors who recognized his potential before he did, Dr. Winn credits his path not to a single decision, but to a series of people who opened doors along the way.

Those experiences didn't just influence his career, they shaped how he thinks about leadership, community, and impact today. Now, as Cancer Center Director at Fox Chase Cancer Center, that perspective is central to how he approaches the role and to what drew him here in the first place.

Drawn to a Shared Mission

Over the past several months, Dr. Winn has spoken often about what stood out to him most about Fox Chase. It wasn't just its legacy as one of the nation's leading cancer centers. It was something less tangible, but just as important.

"What struck me about Fox Chase was the sense of teamwork, connectedness, and mission," he said. "You can feel that people here not only work together, but genuinely care about one another, and about the patients and communities we serve."

That sense of shared purpose played a defining role in his decision to join the organization at this stage of his career. He saw not only an opportunity to build on Fox Chase's history, but to help shape what comes next.

"The very first thing was its mission," he explained when asked what first caught is attention about Fox Chase. "We don't do science just for science's sake, we do it so people benefit."

A Leadership Philosophy Shaped by Experience

Dr. Winn often describes himself not as self-made, but as "community made." That perspective is reflected directly in how he leads. "I love being on a team," he said. "It's not a single person show, it's a 'we.'"

For Dr. Winn, leadership is helping others do their best work, aligning around a shared purpose, and ensuring that everyone is moving in the same direction. In his words, success comes from "one team, one fight."

It's an approach that aligns closely with what he sees as one of Fox Chase's defining strengths: its culture of community.

"Fox Chase Cancer Center is more than a hospital or scientific resesarch facility; it is a community of collaborators. As a newcomer walking the halls, I saw people talking not just like they knew each other, but genuinely liked each other. That makes a huge difference," said Winn.

That kind of environment, he believes, is essential to doing meaningful work.

Bench to Bedside to the Block

While Dr. Winn has spent his career at the forefront of cancer research and care, his vision for the future extends beyond traditional models of discovery.

Historically, progress has been measured by the ability to move ideas from the lab to the clinic - the familiar concept of "bench to bedside." But, in his view, that model is no longer enough on its own. "It can't stop at the bedside," he explained. "If we're really going to have impact, we need to move from bench to bedside to the block."

That belief embodies both his professional experience and his personal journey.

Over the course of his career, he has seen firsthand how advances in cancer research can directly improve outcomes, pointing to significant gains in areas like lung cancer where survival rates have meaningfully increased over time. But he also recognizes that those advances do not reach everyone equally.

For Dr. Winn, the next era of cancer research will depend on closing that gap and ensuring that discoveries are not only made, but delivered in ways that improve outcomes across entire populations. That means thinking differently about where care happens, how research is conducted, and how trust is built.

A Focus on Community, Trust, and Impact

Dr. Winn believes that it is "a privilege to be able to serve" the communities within Fox Chase's catchment area. He views his role as meeting people where they are, bringing information, access, and opportunities into communities that face barriers to healthcare access. That work, he acknowledges, requires more than scientific expertise. It requires trust.

"At a time when many people have questions about their healthcare and where to get reliable health information, being able to show up consistently in communities-that matters," he said. For Dr. Winn, building trust is more than a one-time effort; it's an ongoing process rooted in presence, communication, and partnership.

Looking Ahead

As he begins this next chapter, Dr. Winn sees Fox Chase as well positioned to help shape the future of cancer research both in the local community and beyond.

He believes that the next era of progress will depend on stronger partnerships, new approaches to data and technology, and a deeper understanding of the communities served by cancer centers.

But for him, the ultimate measure of success remains clear. "At the end of the day, it's about impact," he said. "Not just in advancing knowledge, but in improving outcomes and enabling more people to live longer, healthier lives."

That impact is what continues to drive his work, just as it has from the very beginning.

"I am hopeful that we will do great things," he said. "Because without hope, you don't have a future."

For Dr. Winn, that hope is not just a reflection of where he's been, it's the foundation for what comes next.
