Governor Polis Unveils Colorado 150 Art Installations at Eldora Mountain, Jackson Lake State Park

NEDERLAND - Today, Governor Polis revealed two art installations in celebration of Colorado's 150th birthday. These displays are part of a broader effort to honor Colorado's history through community art that tells the story of Colorado's past and future. The Governor previously revealed the artists and hinted at the locations on social media. Today, Governor Polis unveiled a mural by Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano at Eldora Mountain, depicting the evolving relationship between Coloradans and the Rocky Mountain landscape and yesterday he visited the painting by Joseph Graves Jr. at Jackson Lake State Park.

The mural "Tracks Through Time" by Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano extends across two connected wall surfaces at Eldora Ski Area, creating a unified composition that reflects the evolving relationship between people and the Rocky Mountain landscape. The design draws from the history of skiing in Colorado and its place within the state's broader culture of outdoor recreation. Rather than presenting a literal timeline, the Eldora mural uses simplified forms, bold shapes, and directional movement to suggest ascent, descent, and shifting terrain. The visuals reference both early ski travel and the modern recreation industry, while also inviting viewers to connect the imagery to their own experience of movement through the mountains.

Yesterday, Governor Polis also visited Jackson Lake State Park and unveiled a painting by Joseph Graves Jr. The painting honors Dearfield, Colorado's largest Black homesteading community, which was founded in 1910 as a bold vision of self-determination, opportunity, and belonging for African American families seeking a better future. Although the town ultimately declined due to drought and economic hardship, its legacy remains one of perseverance and the power of collective hope. This history inspires an artwork that honors the courage to build community against overwhelming odds and invites viewers to reflect on the enduring pursuit of freedom, dignity, and possibility that continues to shape Colorado to this day.

"Dearfield's story is one of courage, and this painting makes sure Coloradans never forget it. Joseph Graves Jr. has turned a chapter of perseverance into a piece of art that will inspire visitors to Jackson Lake State Park for generations," said Governor Polis.
