Concord, NH - Attorney General John M. Formella announces that members of the Attorney General's Office and members of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit are responding to a report of an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Ashland, New Hampshire, during a police motor vehicle stop on Main Street.
This evening, members of the Ashland Police Department conducted a motor vehicle stop in Ashland with an adult male. Officers reported that the male produced a gun and engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the officers. The male shot one officer striking and wounding the officer. During the exchange, the adult male was shot. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Ashland Police Department officer who was struck and wounded is currently being treated for a gunshot injury in an area hospital, but no other law enforcement officers or private citizens were physically injured during the incident.
There is no known threat to the public at this time. Pursuant to protocol, the names of the officers involved in the exchange of gunfire are being withheld pending the conclusion of formal interviews, and the name of the adult male will be released following notification of next of kin and the completion of an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Investigators are currently assessing if any officers had police body cameras or cruiser camera footage of any portion of this incident.
It is expected that additional information will be released after the autopsy. The exact circumstances surrounding this incident are now under active investigation.
