Senator Collins’ Statement on Nomination of Judge Andrew Benson to Serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced today that Andrew Benson, a current Maine District Court Judge and former homicide prosecutor, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine.

"I strongly support Judge Andrew Benson's nomination to fill the important role of U.S. Attorney for Maine," said Senator Collins. "A Bethel native, Judge Benson would bring more than three decades of experience to the job, including fifteen years as a senior homicide prosecutor for the Maine Attorney General's Office. Judge Benson serves on the Maine District Court, a role which he has held for eleven years. He was first appointed to the bench by Governor LePage in 2014 and then reappointed by Governor Mills in 2021. Mr. Benson was unanimously confirmed by the Maine State Senate both times, and I hope that he will receive bipartisan support here in the United States Senate. At a time when our state faces such serious threats, including illegal Chinese marijuana grow houses and increasing drug trafficking from out-of-state gang members, it is especially important that we fill this seat quickly."

A native of Bethel and current resident of Unity, Judge Andrew Benson has served as a Judge on the Maine District Court since 2014. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Benson was a senior homicide prosecutor for the Office of the Maine Attorney General from 1999-2014. Judge Benson received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law.

Judge Benson's nomination requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

As the senior Republican member of Maine's congressional delegation, Senator Collins is advising the Trump Administration as it evaluates candidates for federal positions in the state. As part of that process, Senator Collins established a Federal Appointments Advisory Committee comprised of community leaders and experienced attorneys from across the state. Judge Benson was one of the applicants the Committee assessed for Senate-confirmed vacancies in Maine.
