Miranda Lambert Reflects On Mourning Losses, Writing 'Vulnerable' Ballad With Ex Blake Shelton

Miranda Lambert reflected on a vulnerable ballad she wrote with ex-husband Blake Shelton while the two country strs were married.

Lambert, 42, spoke about "Over You" during a recent appearance on And the Writer Is…with Ross Golan. Lambert released the emotional song on her fourth studio record, Four the Record, in 2011. She and Shelton, 50, wrote it together as they navigated losses in their lives, including Shelton's brother a d Lambert's friend.

"It was one of those really organic moments between not only romantically linked people, but two songwriters met that night," Lambert said on the podcast. "I remember saying to him, like, 'This is your story. Be as vulnerable as you want to. I'll go there with you if you want to.' And he did, and so did I." Lambert remembered the experience as "pretty magical. …This was two really close friends writing a song that night, and it's a very special song to both of us."

Lambert and Shelton were together for about a decade, and married for about four years. They said "I do" in 2011 and divorced in 2015. During the podcast, Lambert said the divorce "was a really not fun time. …And when I moved back [to Nashville] in 2015, I gathered up all of my friends and relationships from, you know, all of the previous years and just used it, used the misery. I used the staying out too late at honky-tonks. I used what I was living and my friends went on that journey with me - friends being songwriters - and I think I wrote 75 songs in like, a year. I mean, in like, the first four months I moved back."

Lambert married her husband, former New York Police Department officer Brendan McLoughlin, in January 2019. Shelton married Gwen Stefani in 2021. They met as coaches on The Voice more than a decade ago. During her appearance on And the Writer is…, Lambert also spoke about Ella Langley 's record-breaking single, creative chemistry on writing retreats, "The House That Built Me," "Tin Man," staying true to herself and more.
