For many people living with disability, the opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills and experience meaningful connections can come from an unexpected place, on horseback.
Wauchope Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is a volunteer-run charity dedicated to enriching lives through horse-centred activities. With a vision to be the provider of choice for people with disability in New South Wales and a recognised leader in service delivery, the organisation provides a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where participants can thrive. Since 2025, its mission has expanded to support anyone who can benefit from horse-centred activities, reinforcing its belief that Riding Develops Abilities.
As a valued recipient of the Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program, Wauchope Port Macquarie RDA is part of a wider network of community organisations making a positive difference in regional Australia. The program provides practical support that helps grassroots organisations continue delivering meaningful outcomes for the people they serve. For the RDA team, being part of the CPP is more than receiving funding. It is recognition of the important role their volunteers, horses and programs play in improving the lives of local individuals and families.
Behind every riding session is an extraordinary team of dedicated volunteers. The organisation's nine horses are fed and welfare-checked every day of the year, often across multiple sites. On riding days, some participants require a horse leader, two side-walkers, a coach and additional support team members to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. With multiple sessions operating each week, up to 15 volunteers can be required at a time.
In addition to supporting riders, volunteers manage administration, maintain equipment, prepare facilities, clean amenities, provide refreshments and ensure the arena is ready for use week after week. This incredible effort is repeated throughout the year by a committed group of community members who generously give their time to support others.
Support through the Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program helps ease the financial pressure of running such a volunteer-intensive organisation. With average monthly operating expenses of more than $6,600, funding contributes towards essential costs such as horse care, equipment maintenance and veterinary expenses, allowing the organisation to focus on delivering life-changing programs rather than fundraising to cover day-to-day costs.
One of the many success stories is Gary, the organisation's 2025 Rider of the Year. Once a quiet participant, Gary now confidently helps prepare his horse before sessions, shares jokes with volunteers and fellow riders, and embraces every opportunity to engage with those around him. His journey is a powerful example of the confidence, independence and social connections that Riding for the Disabled helps foster.
Through the dedication of volunteers and the support of community-minded organisations such as Regional Australia Bank, Wauchope Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled continues to create opportunities, build confidence and enrich lives across the local community, one ride at a time.
