University of California and Teamsters Begin Systemwide Contract Negotiations

Negotiations between the University of California (UC) and Teamsters Local 2010 have officially commenced for a new collective bargaining agreement affecting approximately 17,757 administrative support staff across the UC system.

Teamsters Local 2010 has identified bargaining priorities that include union rights and representation improvements, workplace protections, scheduling and holiday provisions, layoff and rehire processes, and competitive wages. UC's priorities include supporting its mission, maintaining responsible stewardship of resources, and ensuring fair, sustainable agreements that strengthen the University's role as a leading employer in California.

The talks begin at a pivotal moment for UC. In addition to financial pressures facing public higher education nationwide, UC is navigating heightened federal scrutiny of its campuses and medical centers, creating significant uncertainty for the institution and its workforce.

"UC's administrative support staff keep our campuses and medical centers running every day, from student services to patient care operations," said Associate Vice President for Systemwide Employee and Labor Relations Missy Matella. "As UC faces financial pressures and increased federal oversight, these negotiations are a chance to reach an agreement that fairly supports our employees while ensuring the University can continue delivering on its mission for students, patients and the people of California."

The two parties met on Sept. 16 and discussed issues including steward representation, grievance procedures, leave programs, holidays, labor-management meetings, no-strike provisions and related workplace policies.

Negotiations will continue in the coming months; the existing contract expires March 31, 2026.
