Intersection improvement project at Route 36 and Bob Griffin Road to begin May 26

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The intersection improvement project at U.S. Route 36 and Bob Griffin Road in DeKalb County is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 26. The Missouri Department of Transportation with the City of Cameron has contracted Clarkson Construction Company for the project through a cost-share agreement.

The project will install new traffic signals and lighting, widen the intersection to improve tractor-trailer turning movements and sight distance, and realign entrances along Bob Griffin Road. This work will be split into three construction stages.

Stage 1 Construction:

  • May 26-31 - intersection shoulder work and construction of a temporary J-Turn to the east of the intersection.
    • Traffic Impacts:S. Route 36 will be narrowed to one lane, each direction. There will be a 10-foot width restriction on Bob Griffin Road.
  • June - U.S. Route 36/Bob Griffin Road median intersection and left turn lane improvements.
    • Traffic Impacts:
      • S. Route 36/Bob Griffin Road - median intersection CLOSED. Both east and westbound traffic will not be able to make left turns onto Bob Griffin Road.
      • Traffic on northbound Bob Griffin Road wanting to go westbound on U.S. Route 36, will be directed to use a temporary J-turn to the east of the intersection. To learn more about J-turns visit: J-Turns | Missouri Department of Transportation
      • Traffic on southbound Bob Griffin Road wanting to go eastbound on U.S. Route 36, will be directed to use the U.S. Route 69 (North Walnut Street) interchange to turn around.
      • Business driveway access will be maintained throughout the project.

Stage 1 is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2026. More information on additional stages will be provided as the project progresses. All work is scheduled to be completed by mid-October 2026.
