ATLANTA - Work crews for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will install lane closures and traffic shifts on I-285 in southwest Fulton County this weekend, scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, October 30 and continue to 5 a.m. on Monday, November 2. These closures continue the ongoing I-285 Westside Rebuild concrete slab reconstruction and rehabilitation project currently ongoing along the westside of the I-285 corridor from State Route (SR) 14/South Fulton Parkway in College Park to Collier Road in the City of Atlanta.
Weather and onsite conditions permitting, these are the lane closures and related traffic shifts scheduled from 9 p.m. on Friday, October 30 through 5 a.m. on Monday, November 2:
-
I-285 northbound:
-
Alternating two right lanes or two left lanes closed between SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr Drive (exit 9) and SR 166/Langford Parkway (exit 5).
-
In addition to the lane closures, drivers should pay attention to signage showing traffic lane shifts in the area.
-
I-285 southbound:
-
Alternating two left lanes or two right lanes closed between Camp Creek Parkway (exit 2) and SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr. Drove (exit 9)
-
In addition to the lane closures, drivers should pay attention to signage showing traffic lane shifts in the area.
Crews will be milling/grinding the roadway concrete in preparation to repair or replace the concrete slabs through the project area. Lane closures are necessary to provide sufficient space for crews to work safely and to protect motorists while large equipment is in operation. Motorists are urged to pay attention to shifting and changing travel infrastructure along the corridor. Roadside message boards and signage will alert drivers in advance of lane shifts and closures.
NOTE: I-285 FULL CLOSURE NOV. 6-9: Weather permitting, GDOT contractors plan a full closure of the I-285 northbound and southbound lanes between SR 166/Langford Parkway (exit 5) and Camp Creek Parkway (exit 2) beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 30 until 5 a.m. on Monday, November 2. No traffic will be allowed on I-285 between these locations; all traffic will be detoured around the closure.
Motorists who use this segment of I-285 should make plans now to allow significant additional travel time during these closures, or to plan alternate routes in advance. GDOT strongly urges motorists to rely on the 511GA app as the primary source for real-time traffic conditions and lane closure details. Motorists may also use their preferred navigation or wayfinding apps; however, 511GA provides the most up-to-date, Georgia-specific information to help drivers navigate around the closures as efficiently as possible.
This $206 million project is one of two projects along the I-285 westside corridor designed to repair and/or replace concrete slabs. It is scheduled for completion in 2029. Additional information and project history can be found on the I-285 reconstruction project website.
ADVISORY: Drivers should exercise caution in and around work zones, wear seatbelts, follow signage guidance, reduce speed, move over one lane, when possible, to ensure the safety of crews, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
