The First Meeting of the Nepal-Romania Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania in Bucharest on 4 May 2026.
Head of the Europe Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, Joint Secretary Mr. Ganesh Prasad Dhakal, and Acting Director General for Asia Pacific and Latin America Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Ms. Diana Tase, led their respective delegations.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed various aspects of Nepal-Romania relations, including economic ties, people-to-people exchanges, labour and consular issues, and multilateral cooperation. The two sides also exchanged views on further enhancing cooperation in the areas of energy, agriculture, tourism, information technology, education, and culture.
The Nepali side requested the Romanian side to consider opening its diplomatic mission in Kathmandu. Nepali diaspora being the largest non-EU migrant worker group in Romania, the Romanian side underscored the need of opening of the Nepali diplomatic mission in Romania.
The Romanian side appreciated the contribution made by the Nepali community to the economy of Romania. Joint Secretary Mr. Dhakal expressed his thanks to the Romanian Government for providing opportunities to Nepali nationals to explore their potential in Romanian society, and requested to provide smooth consular services to Nepali nationals. It is estimated that over 55,000 Nepalis are currently employed in various professions in Romania.
Prior to the meeting, Joint Secretary Mr. Ganesh Prasad Dhakal and the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, H.E. Ms. Ana Cristina Tinca signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. Earlier, Joint Secretary Mr. Dhakal called on Secretary of State Ms. Tinca at her office. During the call, they exchanged views on ways to further strengthen Nepal-Romania relations by exploring new avenues of cooperation.
