Thousands have visited the tribute to find the names of those who served, creating moments of remembrance, connection and gratitude
SAN ANTONIO, TX - August 18, 2026 - Since The National Military Monument™ opened on the National Mall on July 28, nearly 5 million names have been specifically searched for among the more than 41 million names to commemorate family members, friends and fellow service members. The response has demonstrated the powerful connection Americans have to those who have served and the importance of creating a place where their service can be seen, remembered and honored.
Today, with the support of the National Park Service, USAA announced that The National Military Monument will remain at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial through November 12, 2026, extending its original run by 10 weeks and giving millions more Americans the opportunity to experience the tribute through two meaningful moments for the military community: Patriot Day, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Veterans Day.
"From the moment The National Military Monument opened, we have seen just how personal this tribute has become," said Juan C. Andrade, President and CEO of USAA. "People are finding the names of their parents, grandparents, friends, themselves and those they served alongside. Behind every one of those names is a story, a family and a sacrifice. The response has been incredibly moving, and we want more Americans to have the opportunity to come to the National Mall, find their connection and remember those who have served."
Across more than 41 million names, The National Military Monument brings together generations of service in one place, connecting Americans today with those who have defended the nation since its founding and those continuing to serve. For visitors, it is a powerful reminder that every generation has answered the call to serve and that every name is part of our shared history.
The extended timeline takes on added significance as the nation approaches September 11. This year marks 25 years since the attacks that changed the course of the country and inspired a new generation of Americans to serve. The National Military Monument is currently the only monument in Washington, D.C., honoring those who served after 2001.
Located at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the two American flags, each 75 times the size of the standard household flag, display nearly all of the more than 41 million names of service members since the Revolutionary War. Those names scroll through the flags by era, giving the illusion that the flags are waving in the wind. George Washington is the first name displayed on the Monument, and the Unknown Soldier is the last, ensuring that those who were never identified are still honored.
The National Military Monument is open to the public from 10am to 10pm every day and admission is free. Visitors can learn more, search for names and submit additional records by visiting USAA.com/Monument250.
