Montenegro is setting an example for other candidate countries and has Hungary's full support to become the next member of the European Union by 2028, was the key message from the meeting between Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Prime Minister of Hungary Péter Magyar, held on the margins of the NATO Summit in Ankara.
Prime Minister Spajić and Prime Minister Magyar discussed bilateral relations, cooperation within NATO, and Montenegro's European perspective.
Prime Minister Magyar said that Hungary's new Government is firmly committed to the European Union's enlargement policy and supports Montenegro's objective of joining the EU by 2028.
He described Montenegro as a model for how the accession process should unfold, stressing that membership can only be achieved through determined reforms, consistent fulfilment of obligations, and tangible results across all negotiating chapters.
Prime Minister Spajić thanked Hungary for its continued support for Montenegro's European integration, underlining that EU membership remains the Government's foremost strategic priority.
Our focus remains on reforms and results. Montenegro aims to be a successful example of the accession process and to demonstrate that enlargement benefits both candidate countries and the European Union, Prime Minister Spajić said.
The two Prime Ministers also discussed further strengthening bilateral relations, noting that the existing legal framework provides a strong foundation for further advancing economic and investment cooperation.
In this context, the Hungarian side expressed interest in participating in the implementation of key infrastructure projects in Montenegro, including the development of railway and transport infrastructure, as well as other projects of strategic importance.
The meeting also reaffirmed the two countries' shared commitment to further strengthening their alliance within NATO and contributing jointly to peace, stability, and security in Europe. They stressed that close coordination among Allies remains essential in addressing current security challenges and in further deepening cooperation.
Prime Minister Magyar invited Prime Minister Spajić to visit Hungary and attend the commemoration marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution at the end of October.
Prime Minister Spajić reaffirmed Montenegro's commitment to further strengthening relations with Hungary and expressed confidence that continued high-level dialogue and closer cooperation between the relevant institutions would facilitate the implementation of the agreements reached and the delivery of joint development projects.
