DPR Launches Play It Forward Scholarship Supporting Former DPR Program Participants' College and Career Goals

(WASHINGTON, DC) - The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has launched the 2026 Rec for All Play It Forward Scholarship, opening the door for eligible young adults to receive up to $5,000 for college or career programs. The program will award up to 40 scholarships, each valued at up to $5,000, to support the educational goals of District residents. The deadline to apply is Friday, July 10, 2026.

"This scholarship reflects DPR's commitment to supporting young people well beyond their time in our programs," said DPR Director Thennie Freeman. "We encourage all eligible residents to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to invest in their future."

The Rec for All Play It Forward Scholarship is designed to help former DPR program participants further their education while recognizing their engagement and success in DPR programs. The scholarship supports students enrolled in accredited postsecondary institutions, including colleges, universities, and vocational or technical programs.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a DC resident
  • Have earned a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have participated in a DPR program
  • Be enrolled in post-secondary education

Recipients will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of the application content, clarity of career goals, and adherence to deadlines
  • Enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Demonstrated unmet financial need
  • Successful participation in a DPR program
  • Submission of two reference letters
  • A brief video submission
