GTA To Recognize Transit Equity Day on Feb. 4

This Wednesday, Greensboro Transit Agency joins public transit providers across the country and around the world in recognizing Transit Equity Day. First created in 2017 and recognized by the Federal Department of Transportation in 2021, transit providers use the occasion to bring awareness of the accomplishments and needs in the equitable provision of public transit. The date chosen for recognition coincides with the birthday of Rosa L. Parks, who's notable act of defiance on a Montgomery, Alabama transit bus led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and made way for legislation requiring equal treatment of all users of transit. Organizers and supporters of today's public transit also work to promote its economic development and sustainability benefits for communities both large and small.

GTA's prepared recognitions includes the distribution of collectable cards produced annually and featuring different images of Rosa Parks' historic action. The 2026 card displays a clip of the 1955 newspaper article reporting the details of her arrest. Also, riders on Transit Equity Day will find free fares for travel throughout the day on fixed route and paratransit services. On each bus, a seat has been reserved with signage dedicated to Mrs. Parks and a QR code leading to a webpage for more information on Rosa Parks and Transit Equity Day at https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/transit/for-our-riders/transit-equity-day. Links to NC Governor Josh Stein's Transit Equity Day Proclamation can also be found on the site.
