Emergency Lane Closure and Traffic Modifications Eastbound I-580 at the Scofield Avenue Undercrossing Near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

Published: Mar 26, 2026

Contra Costa County & Marin County - Caltrans will implement changes to lane closure on eastbound I-580, specifically affecting lane #1 (the far-left lane) from west end of the Toll Plaza Parking Lot to the Stenmark Drive on-ramp in Richmond. This adjustment follows an incident in which a vehicle struck and damaged a steel support beneath the Scofield Avenue undercrossing on the Chevron yard. As a safety precaution, lane #1 will remain closed until temporary shoring is constructed to prevent any further damage to the bridge. The shoring work is tentatively scheduled for completion by April 2, 2026.

To help reduce congestion and facilitate traffic flow during this period, Caltrans will open lane #3 (the far-right lane) for use by all motorists. Drivers are advised to adhere to the reduced speed limit of 40 MPH that is currently in effect and prepare to merge. At this time, no construction or visible work is taking place on I-580.
