When we think of major network outages, our minds immediately turn to hacker attacks or massive hardware failures. Yet, the recent massive outage that brought Australian operator Telstra to its knees (even halting rail services) reminded the world that the Achilles heel of modern digital infrastructure lies in something much more subtle and invisible - time.
As Telstra's CEO herself confirmed, the origin of the nationwide blackout can be traced back to a known vulnerability in time synchronization systems. A misalignment in time servers triggered a devastating domino effect at a point that the communications minister said it was "time for Telstra to face the music".
This incident fits perfectly into the debate raised by APNIC's latest blog post on data synchronization (I strongly suggest reading it). Distributed systems are utterly dependent on synchronization, but each approach involves non-trivial engineering tradeoffs. When 'common time' is lost, the very consistency of data and the alignment of transactions inevitably collapse.
Key points that emerged from this story:
The question every CTO (but also CEO, as outages mean business loss) should ask themselves today is not 'if' their systems are synchronized, but 'how' they are synchronized and what would happen if their primary time source were to suddenly disappear.
