REMINDER: I-70 to CLOSE between 23rd St. & US-40/31st St. for bridge demolitions, Nov. 7-10

JACKSON COUNTY - The Missouri Department of Transportation will close Interstate 70 in Kansas City between 23rd St. and the U.S. Highway 40 and 31st St. intersection from Friday, Nov. 7 at approximately 8 p.m., until Monday, Nov. 10 at approximately 6 a.m. Crews will be demolishing the Lister Ave. bridge and the pedestrian bridge at Oakley Ave. over I-70 as part of the Improve I-70 KC project as well as installing a waterline. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area. No signed detour will be in place, but drivers will be directed to use the various highways across the metro to navigate the area.

Friday, Nov. 7: lane/ramp closures ahead of the I-70 closure (all times are approximate)

• 9 a.m. - On-ramp and off-ramps close on I-70 at 27th St., Jackson Ave., and Van Brunt Blvd.
• 12 p.m. - On-ramp closes from Indiana Ave. to I-70 eastbound
• 12 p.m. - On-ramp closes from US-40 to I-70 westbound
• 6 p.m. - Two left lanes close on I-70 westbound from Manchester Trfy. to US-40
• 8 p.m. - Two left lanes close on I-70 eastbound from Prospect Ave. to 23rd St.

Friday, Nov. 7 from approximately 8 p.m. until Monday, Nov. 10 at approximately 6 a.m.

• Full closure of I-70 eastbound and westbound between 23rd St. and the US-40/31st St. interchange.

Monday, Nov. 10 at approximately 6 a.m.

• All lanes & ramps open to traffic.

All work is weather permitting.

The Improve I-70 KC project is a five-mile stretch of Interstate 70 between The Paseo Blvd. and US 40/31 St. in KC. This section of I-70 was built in the early 1960s and carries up to 120,000 vehicles per day.

The $237 million project will replace aging infrastructure, improve connectivity with heavy traffic congestion during rush hours and traffic incidents. This project includes the rehabilitation or replacement of 12 interchanges and 26 bridges. Overall, the project will improve the safety and reliability of this corridor section, maintain the serviceability of bridges and pavement, and improve accessibility for the local community, while minimizing the overall traffic impacts along the corridor. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 with an anticipated project completion by December 2028. Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
