On April 30, 2025, Consul General of China in Johannesburg, Mr. Pan Qingjiang, met with the Speaker of Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Ms. Morakane Mosupyoe. The two sides exchanged views on further strengthening sub-national engagements and cooperation.
Consul General Pan expressed appreciation to the Speaker and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for their commitment to promoting China-South Africa relationship, and wished the Speaker a success in attending the Chongqing International Friendship Cities Cooperation Conference in late May. Mr. Pan briefed on China's zero-tariff treatment to all African countries that have diplomatic relations with it starting May 1, 2026, emphasizing that this treatment demonstrates China's firm commitment to high-standard opening up and will play an important role in strengthening China-Africa economic and trade cooperation and in promoting the building of a closer China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.
Ms. Mosupyoe reaffirmed the significance of strengthening South Africa-China sub-national exchanges and cooperation, and expressed appreciation for China's zero-tariff treatment, hoping that the benefiting policy will be implemented through joint efforts.
