Charlie Hunt, associate professor of political science, published an article for The Conversation about the fact that state legislative elections across the U.S. are increasingly uncompetitive, with large numbers of seats going uncontested by one of the two major parties, effectively turning many races into one-party contests. While uncontested congressional races remain rare, 30-50% of state lower-chamber races nationwide now lack competition, Hunt says. This means control of many legislatures is determined before Election Day, sometimes even guaranteeing veto-proof majorities.
