The U.S. Census Bureau released its 2025 state population estimates today. The Census Bureau's press release can be viewed at https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2026/population-growth-slows.html. The latest estimates include the Vintage 2025 estimates for 2020 through 2025. Below are the highlights of this release for the State of Hawaii. Data is available on our population estimates page at https://census.hawaii.gov/home/population-estimate/
Highlights of the Vintage 2025 population estimate
The Vintage 2025 population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau reveal that Hawaii's resident population is smaller than previously projected. This adjustment is primarily attributed to significant downward revisions in international migration data, coupled with a persistent domestic out-migration that continues to outpace the state's natural birth-to-death growth.
The Vintage 2025 estimates have revised Hawaii's population downward for every year from 2020 through 2024. Most notably, the 2024 estimate was lowered by 11,194 residents compared to what was projected in the previous year's vintage. A major reason for the downward revision is a change in international migration estimates; for example, the 2023 international migration estimate was reduced from 11,893 in the previous vintage to 6,588 in the current release.
After a brief period of relative stability between 2023 and 2024, the downward trend in total resident population resumed in 2025. The state's population fell to 1,432,820, representing a loss of 2,132 people (0.15 percent) compared to 2024, and a decrease by 22,447 residents (1.5 percent) since the April 2020 census base.
